Antonio Nicolì is a researcher on Organization of Judicial System at the Bologna branch of the Istituto di Informatica Giuridica e Sistemi Giudiziari del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems of the National Research Council).

He graduated with honors from the Faculty of Law of the University of Bologna, with a thesis in Administrative Law, supervised by prof. Luciano Vandelli; subsequently going on to carry out research activities at the Center of Judicial Studies of the University of Bologna (CeSROG) and at the Research Institute on Judicial Systems of CNR (IRSIG-CNR), both directed at the time by prof. Giuseppe Di Federico.
Between 1994 and 1995 he was a fixed-term researcher at the Research Institute on Judicial Systems of CNR as part of the Monitoring program of the new Code of Criminal Procedure, funded by the Ministry of Justice.

Since 28 April 2000, he has been a permanent researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) and more recently his research interests have generally regarded the Superior Council of the Magistracy, the governance of judiciary and the reforms in the administration of justice. Furthermore, some of his specific research interests currently concern judicial specialisation, the mobility of judges and public prosecutors, the selection of Court Presidents, the institutional role that lawyers play in the governance of judiciary and finally the use of artificial intelligence directed towards judicial decision-making.

He is the author of Professionalità del magistrato e ruolo dell’Avvocatura (The Role of Lawyers in Professional Evaluations of Judges and Public Prosecutors) published by Libellula Edizioni in 2018; and of various journal articles, encyclopaedic entries and scientific contributions in collective works on different issues regarding the status of judges and public prosecutors and the organization of civil, criminal and juvenile justice. He is also co-author of the Manuale di Ordinamento Giudiziario (Guide to the Organization of Judicial System) published by Cedam in 2004; and of the volumes Ordinamento Giudiziario. Uffici giudiziari, CSM e governo della magistratura” (Organization of Judicial System: Judicial Offices, CSM and Governance of Judiciary) published by Cedam in 2008 and 2012 and by Bononia University Press in 2019.

He has for many years taught Organization of Judicial System and Judicial Organization and Behaviour at the University of Bologna and at the University of Florence, as a fixed-term professor.

He is currently a member of the Comitato Unico di Garanzia del CNR (Guarantee Committee of CNR).
