Piero Fiorelli’s 100th birthday

Piero Fiorelli, a distinguished law and language historian, professor of History of Italian law at the University of Florence and a member of the “Accademia della Crusca”, served as first director of the Istituto per la documentazione giuridica – IDG in Florence, established in May 1968; the Institute in 2002 took the name of Istituto di Teoria e Tecniche dell’Informazione Giuridica – ITTIG (Institute of Legal Information Theory and Techniques) and today – since 2019 – Istituto di Informatica Giuridica e Sistemi Giudiziari – IGSG (Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems).
To Piero Fiorelli IGSG owe the intense preparatory, organisational and managerial activity that led the Institute to take its first steps and it is he who initiated those researches that have been consolidated over the next 50 years. This birthday, which is particularly significant for the Institute, coincides with two other anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), established by royal decree on 18 November 1923, and the 60th anniversary of Law no. 283 of 1963 with which the humanities became part of the CNR research areas. This combination of celebrations led the Journal published by IGSG, Rivista italiana di informatica e diritto, to choose to publish two texts by Professor Fiorelli that demonstrate the attention he dedicated to the Institute and testify to the fundamental role he played in the CNR during crucial years of its history.
